Fel stopped by the Autays’ den to whisper (if the growl that Fel emitted could possibly be called a whisper) for her adopted child. Tonight, however, she would not drill the pup. Well, she might, if she felt she needed to. But in reality, Fel wanted to show her something that might give her spirit some strength against the underlying pain of abandonment she must have felt. Blaire was resilient and rebellious, and Fel knew the lie her brain had concocted to help her cope with that tragedy. When she was old enough to handle it responsibly and not lash out, the brutish fae would tell her. Until then, she could only offer her help indirectly.

When she verbally dragged the apprentice out of her den, she would lead her straight to the training pasture to be under open skies. The night was fair, with barely any clouds to hide the stars. She led her through the grass towards the river, crossing it with a splash. Fel would glance to her side - where Blaire was expected to be - and make sure she was still there. If not, she would either help or reprimand her as needed. Eventually, Fel picked a spot towards the center of the territory and stopped, scanning their surroundings thoroughly. Her nose and ears would continue to monitor their solitude as they had been doing, but her eyes and primary attention would be devoted to something else. Without much warning, Fel laid down and rolled onto her back, gesturing with her tail that the younger fae was to do the same thing beside her.

Once it was done, she would rumble softly, “Look up, and give your eyes a moment to adjust. Then tell me, what do you see?”

How long had she lay awake on this night? Unable to drift into the soft grasp of sleep. To this she held no answer, nor the ability to do much beyond sigh in annoyance at the situation. Many nights had been void of sleep for her, but this night in particular seemed to drag on, with time crawling past at a cruelly slow pace. Tired eyes fell into a familiar routine of tracing the jagged outline of the den until the repetition of the motion solicited yet another sigh. She allowed her head to finally rest upon her paws, giving, at the very least, her muscles a chance to rest though her mind could not. Time continued to play its cruel trick on the apprentice, until a welcoming scent hung on the air, accompanied by a low grumble. She knew what both meant, and immediately rose to her feet to meet her saviour outside the den.

No words were exchanged between the two as Blaire followed her mentor through the welcomingly warm night. She found comfort in the silence between them, for she knew Fel was not one to speak simply for the pleasure of hearing her own voice. She spoke when she had reason to, and Blaire was intrigued to find out what that reason might be on this night. They walked in the direction of the training pasture, so the pup could only assume that she was meant to have a training session. It would not be the first time that the cover of night set the scene for their training, but it was not something that happened often.

Remaining dutifully at Fel's side as they moved across the land, Blaire greedily breathed in the fresh open air, thankful to be out of the stuffy den. Before long, they had reached the pasture, and Blaire, though still silent, looked to Fel for instruction. Much to the young wolf's surprise, Fel suddenly lay down amidst the grass, and rolled onto her back. Tilting her head and wrinkling her nose in question at this, she did as she was beckoned to, and laid down beside the massive fae. It was only then that words broke the silence. Blaire stared up at the night sky that was littered with glowing stars, though they held no where near the magnificence of the moon that shone brighter than all the stars combined. "The same thing as every night. The sky.. the stars.. and the moon." she replied simply and softly, now more than ever, confused at the nature of their being here.

Fel wriggled her shoulders to move until the side of her pelt just brushed the side of the other. Blaire had responded in a confused manner, which was expected. In a calm, soothing rumble, she continued, “The stars are what I want you to tell you about. Long ago, my first mentor told me a story about our ancestors and death. He said that the brave wolves who lived and died valiantly and with honor rise to join their ancestors in the stars so that they may watch over and guide their descendants.” She paused, allowing the concept to sink in, “This may seem like nonsense, and it is nothing I am forcing you to believe. In fact, I am offering you a choice. Whether or not you think it is true is upon yourself. But, I will let you know… I believe it.” Fel raised her paw to the sky, pointing to the brightest star, “That is North Star. Her name is regal, comprised of two words… I used to have such a name too. Some say she is the great alphess of the sky, strong and bold and always faithful to those below, even though her paws never touched the earth. If you ever need to find direction when you’re travelling, follow that alphess and she will guide you north. Also, sometimes, wolves need guidance from those with more wisdom than they, and so those spirits rain down from the sky to visit them in person. They can only come to certain areas though, and it is difficult to find them. That is what happens, according to this belief, when a star shoots through the sky.” Fel gave another pause before adding, “You are probably wondering what the purpose of my telling you these beliefs are, right?” Icy eyes glanced over to meet the color of striking blue for an answer before turning back up to the endless expanse of space, “Perhaps there will come a time when you feel alone, lost, confused, or what have you. It happens to all wolves. I just want you to know that there is always help to turn to, even when there are no wolves around you. They will guide you, so long as you allow them to. After all, they are the reason I came to these lands.” A soft summer breeze flickered and trickled through the tall grass, ruffling Fel’s belly fur ever so softly in the most pleasant of ways. With a smile, she searched for her most recent mentor, mentally calling out a hello to him and wondering if he was watching her right then. Would he still be proud?

Blaire remained silent, listening with intense concentration on each and every word that spilled from the large ebony fae. Though she could be stubborn and bull headed at times, the young apprentice always listened to those she respected with her full attention. There was much about this world, and about life that she wished to know, and there were plenty of wolves around her, well versed in the ways of the world, that could impart a great deal of knowledge upon her. When Fel revealed that it was indeed the stars that would be the topic of their conversation, Blaire shifted her gaze from the twinkling lights to the face of the beta. Searching for any hint of a grin, or a mischievous spark in her eyes, anything to point towards a joking matter. But there was nothing of the sort to be found. Though uncertainty was still quite present upon the pup's face, she was quick to push aside the feeling, and open her mind to whatever it was that Fel had to say.

Rolling her head back to centre, she let young, ambitious steel blue eyes rove across the vast night sky, while she listened intently. The wolves of the past, those who had died, they lived among the stars now? Narrowing her gaze at the dazzling lights that adorned the black night sky around them, Blaire huffed in near disbelief at this. How could that be? How could wolves who had died, be in the sky? She had many questions, but she would let them stir in her mind until it was her turn to speak. A raised paw from the beta drew Blaire's attention to one star in particular that seemed to shine brighter than all of the others. North Star? she mulled the name over in her mind as she listened to the story of the great alphess.

A break in the beta's words left room for a simple Yes. from the apprentice accompanied by a searching gaze, looking for answers to questions she had not yet asked. Listening again, she made a valiant attempt to choke back feelings of abandonment at the mention of one day feeling alone, lost or confused. She did not wish to ever feel that way, but took some comfort in that, if by some miracle, what her mentor had spoken to her now was true, that she would never truly be alone. Not ever. Rolling onto her stomach, Blaire tucked her tail around her belly and dropped her gaze to the dancing blades of grass below her for a brief moment before searching for the familiar icy stare of her saviour. "If.. if what you say is true.. then you mean to tell me that you will always be with me.. right?" she said in a near whisper, her voice a little shaky. It was unlike her to speak with anything but absolute conviction in her voice, but the fear of being alone was something that she struggled with.

Fel’s gaze rested on the sky, finally finding the patch of stars that led her here. They weren’t too far from North Star, but rather they trailed behind her. Every year they made a pilgrimage across the sky, and every summer they would be in the same position. The brutish beast wondered if they saw what their descendant had become, a beta of a far-away land where no wolf knows of the great mountains of the north. There, gales of wind howl to the songs of the wolves strong enough to withstand them, and snow hides the ground year-round. Would they smirk in amusement at her coat being so thin, out of necessity for the season, that she resembled their rivals from the foothills in the summer? Searching for answers, she failed to notice the younger, equally questioning gaze until the form beside her rolled.

The fae looked to the other, though no compassion or care was visible in her forever-frozen orbs. She was concerned, slightly, but could not show it. The quiver in the young voice was strange. She had not heard such a sound from her since she was a young pup in the Autays’ den. Fel blinked slowly, rumbling in the calmest tone, “When I do leave this realm, I shall watch over you until you are ready to join me. However,” she chuckled slightly, “I don’t plan on dying any time soon, young one. I’m still kicking and breathing, and anyone who thinks otherwise will see for themselves.” The beast rolled over, looking to the other as she rose to a poised seated position. “I tell you of the wolves who walk among the stars because there may be a day when you are out alone somewhere and you need help finding your way and getting through everything. I may not be your mother, nor am I an Autay, but I did find you. You are in my keep. My ancestors watch over you as they watch over me.” She licked the top of the amber head. “There are many great wolves who walk with you.” With a patient rumble, she looked around in a scanning manner before focusing back on the pup. She knew that perhaps the apprentice would never believe this. But, after losing so much faith in the world, even a wolf like Fel needed something to believe in. Some truth, be it a fact or a theory… Something besides the promise of death, the promise of failures, or the promise of pain and conflict and hardship. There needed to be just one thing to hold onto, and this was Fel’s one belief. She felt the need to share it, so that if the youth lived long enough to see the world burn around her, she could look up at the stars and find the strength she needed. It was the one thing that could not fail her and that no one could take away.

Though the Beta's voice was not the softest of those she had heard, to Blaire, her voice, her scent, her presence, were enough to put her at ease. There were few that she truly trusted, but Fel was one of them. Confirmation of her inquiry prompted a light sigh of relief from the young apprentice, her muscles loosening from their subconscious stiffness. It was however, the chuckle and joking statement about how very much life her protecter still held within her that freed Blaire from any remaining doubt. The long rusted hairs that adorned her tail danced along the blades of emerald beneath her as it began to wag ever so slightly. A grin found its way across her features as steel blue eyes seemed to come to life from a sullen stone cold, to a more familiar mischievous spark. "I pity the fool who should think you anything other than capable." she barked back in a playful tone.

A wave, of what the pup could only categorize as relief, fell over her at the notion that she would never truly be alone. If there were wolves in the sky.. if they could help guide her through life, then she would take comfort in that, for there was little in this world that warranted such a warm feeling. That warmth however was quick to be masked by the sharp sting of anguish and bitter resentment at the mention of a mother. "You may not have birthed me, but you are far more of a mother than my own ever was to me." she retorted, her nose wrinkling in irritation. Gangly legs unfolded from beneath her and pushed her to her full height and resent fuelled steps carried her a few feet away from her mentor.

Clenching her eyes shut, she sucked the sweet night air in through her nose, holding it captive within her lungs for a brief moment before letting it spill back into the open space. She had been told that her quick temper would forever be her downfall, and to that she could not argue. She could however work to control the demons that threatened to crawl from the darkness inside of her, and keep them at bay, hidden from those around her. Taking another drink of air, she pushed it forcefully out through her nose before opening her eyes and turning back to Fel. Striding forward, her tail hung in a near shameful droop behind her, knowing it was unbecoming of her to speak in such a manner, she paused a short distance from the Beta. "Thank you. Thank you for all you have done for me, and all you will do. Our blood may not be the same, but you... you are my family now and forever." she cooed softly, her voice light and silky as a small smile tugged at the corner of her ebony lips. "And while great wolves may look down upon us, guiding us and walking among us," she noted, her eyes scouring over the twinkling lights that dotted the black night sky, "The greatest one I shall ever know, sits with me, here and now.

The only thing that changed in her appearance from the playful remark was the echo of a smile upon her lips. It did not last long, and slowly became more faint until it faded away from existence. Fel looked to the sky, looking at the position of the moon now, all of her spiritual purposes completed. It would be wise to head back in the next hour, and at a slow amble it was about a twenty minute stroll.

But then the pup made a mistake. Now, mistakes were forgivable and excusable, and the pup had every right for both. It was just that Fel never did have much patience for the youth’s flinging fancies or their idiocy. This would be a good lesson, and for that Fel began to growl as the apprentice stomped away. Fel said in response, “You’re letting your emotions win over you. Some day, you will watch someone you love betray you or get hurt or something else of the sort. If your first response is to lash out recklessly at the source, you will die. The smart thing to do is swallow what you feel and use it as your fuel. Control it, and control yourself. Not the other way around.” The words were a strong warning, and gave no room for response in her tone. She waited for the pup to return in an apologetic stance.

Return she did, but not with the words Fel had hoped for. She rose once the little display was over and strode to close their gap, craning her neck down glare at the fae while speaking. “Your sentiments are kind, emotional, honest, and therefore rather useless. Of all of those adjectives, I only value honesty. Use your kindness only when necessary for your own ends. I use my emotions to invigorate the shreds of a soul I still have, but I suggest that you skin yours alive and feed them to the coyotes. They do you no purpose, and they are either too weak or overwhelmingly strong. Much like an alpha, you should not have either of those in your pack.” Fel turned around, taking the first few steps back to the clearing before finishing, “Your flattery falls flat upon my ears. I have heard too many of them and their opposites to allow anything to stir me. Come to bed, Blaire. Narla is training you in the morning.” With that, and perhaps an acknowledgement from Blaire, the two of them went back to their camp. Fel knew exactly what she had just done to the apprentice. It was all calculated... It would only make her stronger.
