Thistles and Thorns [P/Desmond] Empty

It took him a while to reach the lands he sought out but in the end it was worth it. Finally the waters came into sight where during Spring months, the pack had been ordered to take down a huge moose. Lives had been both lost and endangered but they had returned victorious. Smiling at the memory- he stood on the mossy bank. The sun reflected off his deep amber gaze as it seemed to turn them almost gold in colour. He did not know exactly what it was but something had really drawn him here today and once he had woke he had left his den and set in this direction without a word. It was still early in the morning, the sun halfway through its journey to the centre of the sky and dew sparkled across the lush grasses. Shutting his eyes for a brief moment, he inhaled deeply- filling his lungs with fresh and clean air before exhaling sharply as his shining orbs became visible once again. Standing on his toes, he sniffed the air as the scent of a young doe hit him full on. Surprise crossed his features as he turned in a full circle to spot the elegant creature struggling through briars that managed to snag on both its short fur and some embedding into her skin. Tilting his head, Twelve sat at a distance and watched with a small frown. It struggled and struggled yet only managed to get itself even more tightly tangled. What was it doing out here all alone? She seemed much too young to be away from her herd, evidently one of the fawns from the Spring that had just passed. With a swift and silent approach, he came to a stop only inches from the terrified animal. His breathing slowed and he could feel the Hunter instinct kicking in, he could so easily leap and take her life right here right now. But as he gazed into its deep, innocent gaze he felt the want for it disappear. This gentle animal did not deserve to die today.

He prowled forward quietly, wincing as it reared in fright and the tempting scent of fresh blood made his heart race. But with a forced effort he kept calm, stepping forwards until he could practically feel its racing heartbeat. If only the herbivore could realize that his intentions were good but of course it wouldn't, the wolf was a killer and nothing else in her eyes. Taking a deep breath he leaned down and closed his jaws around the thorny tendrils, stiffening as his fangs grazed off her side and forcing himself to stay came as his heart raced and his nostrils flared. It was a slow and difficult job, the doe's frantic struggling only making it harder but finally he snapped the last thing that held her back and she was free. Leaping forward, the graceful animal did stumble for a brief moment before regaining its footing. He watched in silence as it turned and blinked once in his direction, possibly confused by the brute that rather than attempting to kill her, saved her life? Or was he tricking her? He could almost feel the wheels in her brain turning before without hesitation it turned and darted off into the vegetation. Sighing he turned, only to blink with surprise as a sharp pain pricked at his pad. Lifting the paw, he watched as a small thistle sprang upwards- purple head swaying in the breeze. It was weird to see how even the plants of these lands had their own ways to protect themselves from the higher ranking creatures in the food chain. Him, that doe and this thistle were all connected. The wolf was given the fangs to kill the deer, the deer the agility to outrun them, and the thistle the sharp leaves to fend away the deer. Shaking his head he settled back on his haunches, gaze traveling across the shimmering waters as he sat in complete silence.

Thistles and Thorns [P/Desmond] Empty

Wandering around the lands, Desmond had no plans or intentions of finding anything. it was simply a stroll through his home lands. The Alpha was silent as he explored the terrain. It was not until he heard some struggling off in the distance, did he pick up his pace. It was faint, rushing forward, the sounds got closer. Nearing the area the sounds had came from, he saw the figure of a wolf a small deer. Interested in how this hunt could have gone so horribly wrong, Desmond watched in silence. The Alpha was shocked with the scene that played out before his two emerald eyes. Stifled, Desmond could not move. His paws were firmly planted on the ground. One part of him, the fatherly part, told him to go out there and punish the Warrior for such a thing. That kill would have been good for the pack. Yes, the kill pile was sufficient. But what was this wolf even thinking. The other portion of Desmond, the not-so-serious type, thought it over. Perhaps this wolf had a reason, a valid justification in his own mind. He had met this wolf before, briefly as a Warrior in the hunt, and then when he made a call to meet the pack, he got to hear his name again. Though the Alpha could not recall it at this time. Stepping forward, he stood to the back of the male, watching him as he watched the deer run off. There were so many ways he could go about this, but the Alpha decided he would not play foolish games with his pack member. Clearing his throat, he stood tall, though his tail was relaxed. "Care to explain this little situation? I mean, I am no judge and you are no Hunter... But I must say, it was interesting to see."

He had to admit that he had not realized that a wolf had approached from behind and started as it spoke. However he was quick to get himself together and turned with a steady and calm gaze as if he had been aware of the fellow brute's presence the whole time. It took only a second to realize that this brute was in fact his alpha and Twelve's ears fell right back against his head as a respectful bow was given. His tail lay in a relaxed position on the grass behind his hind legs and he straightened again to listen to the words spoken by the Alpha. It took him a moment to realize what the brute meant and he blinked his deep amber gaze with surprise, not realizing that Desmond had been there for the whole thing. Flicking his ears he thought for a moment, considering making up some story about losing the prey but eventually just giving up and going with the truth. Plus, he supposed he would never lie to his Alpha. Watching him closely, he began to speak slowly, uncertain as to wether this was a negative or positive interesting the former rogue spoke of. "It is Summer, prey is plentiful. Had it been Winter I would not have done such a thing and usually even during the Summer months I would not as it is foolish to get too lazy when it comes to prey, you never know when something could happen I know. But this was a young doe, hopefully able to produce many more generations of young to keep our pack fed. And anyway, we were not given our stamina and hunting techniques so that we can catch a defenseless creature that had no chance of winning. I see it as cheating, and I am a fair and honorable wolf despite what I was born into." He blinked, not intending to hint at his past of being called a 'dirty blood' and countless other names but still it had slipped out, with a small shake of his head he brushed it off and continued on. "Anyway, we live in a circle. The deer given the agility to outrun the wolf and the wolf given the ability to catch those that could no longer keep up with this circle. She was not ready to be a meal, I felt it was wrong to do anything but set her free. I hope you understand sir, if you feel it is such a great loss I can get some others together and catch something that will feed the pack much better then that young creature" He stated with a dip of his head. He had not meant to rant as much as he did but it was out now and strangely enough, he did not mind that he spoken more than he had intended to. He had to abandon this shell that had formed around him. It was becoming a nuisance.

Leaning back on his haunches by the waters, he tilted his head to the side. "I do not know if you can recall my name sir Alpha Desmond as this is my first time to talk to you directly and vice versa but I am Twelve, a Warrior proud to serve your pack." His long earthen coloured tail swished from side to side across the dew sparkled grass and he found himself once again breaking the silence. So what brings you out here so early sir? That is if you do not mind me asking" He asked, watching the large brute curiously. He did not know a whole lot about the male that ruled their pack and was quite interested about him to be honest. If the Alpha was in the mood to talk he would definitely listen, he wouldn't mind knowing more about the Alpha.

"Fair points, I guess. Still an odd thing to watch. But what was this 'thing' you were born into?" Desmond was rather curious of these words. All wolves were born to hunt, taught to kill and forced to fight. That's what growing up was for, to train you for life. He knew nothing different. Had his father been watching, Desmond would have been scolded for letting the deer loose. But Desmond did not wish to be his father, nor anything like him. "Warrior, I am five years old... I know how the circle of life goes. If you wish to continue, would you mind telling me where pups come from? For I certainly don't know that information either..." he spoke in a sarcastic tone. The Alpha stared at the other, looking over him from head to toe. "Twelve, huh? Interesting name you have. Is there a story behind said name?" Desmond stared at him again. He knew his words had seemed a little harsh, but he was not going to be so playful with a wolf he didn't even know. He had barely just met this Twelve character and he wasn't about to let this wolf see a different side of his Alpha. "Every morning, I do three perimeter checks. I walk around the borders, making sure all is well. I wake up normally when the sun does, that way I have the first light of day on my side. I then aimlessly wander the lands, looking for anything I can get myself into, ya know? It's just a routine I've always had and will always have. What are you doing out here, letting little deer go?"

He watched the alpha in silence for a few moments, deep amber gaze running over the brute in an assessing manner. Twelve was not one to be too open about his past and especially about the world he was brought into. But he couldn't ignore a question from an Alpha could he? He frowned thoughtfully, tail twitching from side to side slowly over the dew covered grass. He was wondering if he would have told this former rogue if it had been a different situation and they had both been of equal ranks. Probably not...though it was hard to tell, no one had ever asked him straight up like that before. Even in his old pack, the other yearlings had mostly kept their distance, no doubt told by their parents to stay away because those with dirty blood were bad news. His upper lip curled slightly and his claws pierced the earth beneath him. However he blinked and gave his head a sharp shake, banishing the unwelcome thoughts and once again focusing on his company. In the end he merely shrugged. "My mother and father, they both came from two separate packs that did not like each other. However my parents fell in love and that's how my siblings and I came into this world. They stayed together in Neutral lands for a while but something drove them back to their packs, I was too young to know why and never got a chance to ask. My siblings and I ended up in my mother's pack, she never told anyone who our father was but they began to suspect that he was either a rogue" He used the word carefully, well aware that his alpha had once been one and did not know enough about the brute's past to know if it was an unpleasant or pleasant memory. "or someone from another pack. So I spent my life growing up to insults, 'dirty-bloods' was a common one. It may not sound like much now but at the time all I wanted was to be the best Warrior of my pack that I could be and the fact that everyone was disgusted by my existence did not help." He stopped there before he could rant on and flicked his ears. He would keep silent about the rest of his past unless asked for it directly, it was not an enjoyable topic for him to discuss.

A small smile graced his features at Desmond's sarcastic words after his little speech about the circle of life and all that. "Of course sir, just backing up my answer a little bit." He stated, voice composed yet a little grin pulling at the corners of his maw mischievously. He was a calm and 'down to business' type of wolf but also had that mischievous streak that was just as strong. A little darer when the time called for it. His smile would once again be replaced by a frown when asked if he had been given the name Twelve for a specific reason. He honestly could not remember ever been told a reason by his mother or father for the odd name, he had never had much time to ask though. Frowning, he slowly shook his head. "Nope don't think so, I never really had a chance to ask. He stayed sitting, ears flicking with slight discomfort and he was relieved when the topic of conversation was turned to the alpha. He nodded at the reasons given, made sense. The last part caused a sharp laugh to hop from his maw. "One thing Desmond, if you find me weak from that little action I have to say you are wrong. I am a Warrior yes? Well I can tell you that I choose this rank for a reason." His amber eyes flashed and he shifted his position on the damp grass. The scars that covered his body could no longer be hidden, his worse injuries from a huge bear had still been in the process of healing when he'd arrived at the borders of Helidos. Soon afterwards he had ended up in a fight with two Erenyx wolves before the wounds were fully healed and they'd been reopened again along with him gaining many more. They had left nasty scars. "Anyway, much like yourself I had given the borders a quick run before letting myself take a quick rest here since I had no others jobs needed doing until a little later in the day." He stretched one of his stiff forepaws, sliding it forwards before pulling it back. "It's quite beautiful here, especially at a sunny dawn." He sat in silence then, giving the brute time to speak and ask more questions if he wished to. Twelve had avoided the question asking as much as possible, it was the alpha's job to ask and those lower than him to answer. The sun bounced off his eyes, making them look like little balls of fire as he sat in complete silence and waited.
