Fel looked up, water dripping from her maw. The river here was cool despite the rising heat of the warmer months. She sighed and slowly waded into the water before suddenly plunging below the surface. In a second, she was up, shaking her pelt to and fro to rid it of excess weight of moisture. Then, making her way toward the emerald hills again, she eyed a particular promontory. The sun was setting, after all, and she wanted to catch the last rays. The beast did not enjoy the view out of pleasure for beauty, but tranquility and solitude helped her think… And there was a lot to ponder about. There would be change coming to Agavos with the new pups, and she could not help but wonder if it would have some negative result, and then there were the dreams… Cold eyes glanced up, after which the body followed.

There was no sign of large predators or worthwhile prey. The rabbits would be in their warrens by now, and Fel’s snout was a bit too large to try to shoot down one of their entrances. The old fae simply lay down upon that grassy ledge, soaking in the spring air and last rays of the sun. As she looked out, she realized that the rolling hills were covered in flowers, some of which were the violets. Fel thought back to the sea of violets, then to the ring of fire, then to her drowning with an eerie serenity in the flowers with the warmth inside of her. It had to mean something, she thought. She didn’t quite like not knowing the depths of her own psyche. But sometimes dreams are only that and do not cross the border into reality. With a deep sigh, the raven wolf unleashed a puff of pollen which the wind carried away into the eternal void of cyclical life.

Narla had been permitted a rare day off from her training with her mentor. Now the weather had changed, the dingo was in a much better mood. With the sun quickly warming the earth, Narla was more at home in the forest. Winter snows were exciting and beautiful back home but here they were intense and deadly. The cold sapped the life from her body, willing her to fall into an endless slumber. Spring brought cool mornings and warm afternoons with gentle breezes. It was lovely to see the fresh colour on display as well as trees regrew their leaves and little wildflowers blossomed in the pastures.

Out in Angel's Wake there were a wide collection of wildflowers down in the pastures of the valley. They came in all sizes and colours but there was one in particular Narla was looking for. A deep purple bloom with a hint of yellow deep in its throat. She thought perhaps they might make a nice gift. She picked the best she could find, the ones almost in full bloom without a single mark or wilted petal. The leaves on the stems added a touch of wild to the sweet bouquet - perfect for their intended recipient. The dingo gathered up the violets gently in her mouth and set off back up the hill as the sun began to set. Almost to the top she spotted what appeared to be an outcropping.

On a whim she decided it might be nice to watch the sun set before it would move on to rise again in the continent of her old home. She followed the path, expecting it to take her to a small opening at the edge of the trees, instead it brought her atop the cliffs where they looked out to the world beyond. Ahead a figure had already claimed the spot for her own. Narla stood and watched silently as her mentor remained so still and peaceful. It was nice to see her like this, she didn't want to disturb her. She was just happy here, watching her friend. But the violets were her gift to her friend and there was no time like the present. The dusky female cleared her throat and approached cautiously, sitting silently beside the large she-wolf. Brown eyes watched the dark fae as she studied the sunset.

The soft swish of small paws moving through the grass behind her did not go unnoticed. But the raven beast knew that gait well enough, and was further reassured by the hint of its pack scent that accompanied it that she did not stir from her position. Soon enough, her creature approached her with a verbal clue to her presence, and still, Fel did not move or respond. She knew Narla would not expect a response either. She wasn’t one to talk too much. Her lifeless orbs latched onto the sky’s dancing hues, trying to derive what life and joy they could from the fading sun like leeches. But their power was not strong enough, and they remained as cold as before. Fel exhaled again, deeper this time, and rested her head down on her paws, still looking up to the fiery heavens. In a thoughtful rumble, she asked the other, “Where do you find the joy that dances in your eyes?” The question was not given for her own instruction. Fel did not rely on pure happiness to fuel her body with liveliness, for she had enough determination, will, contentment, and sense of duty to inspire a hundred lifetime’s worth of raging against the dying of the light. But she did often wonder what made the others keep going. It had to be one of two things – neither of which she had ever truly found. Fel could not grasp them, and received only their illusions. Therefore, they must not have existed to anyone except for in terms of a biologically programmed lie that encourages both self-preservation and the continuation of the species. The black fae was a defect. She broke into the truth – her truth. But if it were so, what was the fire that nipped at her haunches right now?

The dingo sat for a moment, admiring the she wolf who was her mentor. Wreathed in the halo of evening sunlight she supposed she might look quite nice. She smiled at the odd thought, still gripping the violets between her teeth, tail thumping happily behind her. Oh, right. She lowered her head, placing the flowers delicately before the black wolfs paws. "I just wanted to give you something small. You know, to say thank you for all the training and help you've given me." That was really only part of it, of course. She really just wanted to do something nice for the Beta. This wolf who was her closest friend and confidant needed to know how appreciated she was. But Narla knew the Beta did not like useless gestures and trivial pursuits. Everything needed a reason. She smiled softly, brown eyes warm and welcoming should the Beta have anything to say. Fel did have a question, whether an answer was expected or not the dingo offered one. "It is the small pleasures in life that bring me such joy. The beauty of this sunset, the keen sting in my limbs from my exercise. And the surprise in finding you this lovely evening." The dingo was not particularly eloquent, often having too harsh an accent or too crude a vocabulary to move wolves with her words. It wasn't that her vocabulary was limited, only that her preferred words were shorter, slurred conjunctions of larger phrases. In her home continent it was considered imprudent to waste breath on words in severe heat.

Fel’s gaze was forced from the abyss that stretched ahead of her, which had such a magnetic pull upon her that she seemed to lose her sight to another realm, to a little bushel of flowers given to her. Call it a bouquet, if you must, but that is not what intrigued her. It was, be it by fate, that the flowers were exactly those that followed her to no end. It was so very peculiar, and though it did not evoke any sense of alarm within the old fae, she felt some other, stranger feeling rise in her chest. It was warm, pleasant, and terrifying. It was both vaguely familiar and also completely new. She had felt it before, muted in her dreams. But now it engulfed her fully, almost suffocating her. Fel closed her eyes, concentrated on breathing, and rumbled in response, “I appreciate the gesture, but I quite frankly don’t know what to do with picked flowers. As for the reason, you’ve no need to be grateful. We made an experiment, and I intended it to be a fair one.” She raised her maw back up to the heavens.

The feeling subsided, only to be reinforced in the second wave of conversation. The philosophical idea of the motivation of others crawled away from the fire in her, leaving her body and fleeing into the cool darkness behind them. Her black nose twitched slightly as a hint of that disturbance. It had not really crossed her mind that she could be, by her very presence, somehow valuable to someone emotionally. Of course, she was valuable to multiple wolves as an asset to the pack and themselves, but this was different. Perhaps she did have one true “friend” after all. She wouldn’t ever truly know without discussion, and even then she might doubt it. But the beta’s resolve was stronger than this surprise. She did not react, nor did she respond to the creature. Instead, she had a single thought run through her mind, calling for an equally single action. All Fel did was softly flick her tail to her closest side, thump the ground invitingly, and then allow the banner to retreat as if nothing occurred. The slightest hint of a smile, the most genuine of all smiles in her past years, tugged at the corners of her lips.

Ooc - Sorry for the wait love. I hope this is ok though.

The warrior sat watching her mentor consider the gift. I hope she likes them, was the close-to-desperate thought that ran through her mind. Narla wanted so badly to impress the large wolf. The others eyes were closed as her response came and Narla immediately offered suggestion. "You could scatter them about your den, or you could keep them in a bunch somewhere to admire before they begin to wilt." She paused, thinking for a moment. "Oh! Or you could try to plant them. Yeah, I've seen it done, you dig a little hole and stand them up in it, then fill the hole in around the flowers. With enough rainwater to drink they should grow a new bush right where you want them." The dingo could feel herself rambling, an action she was sure would irritate the wolf - it had done so before.

She took a steadying breath, it shook as she both inhaled and exhaled; she realised she was rather nervous. The little dingo's heart was pounding in her chest, she swore that if she looked down she'd see the little strands of fur laying atop where her heart sat shaking in time with the rapid beat. Narla braced her forelegs, solidifying her stance, attempting to ensure they would not weaken. The sun continued to set, taking with it the last warmth of the day. She could feel the fingers of heat gently disentangling themselves from her fur as the sun slipped lower and lower, the sky being painted with oranges, purples, blues and pinks. So many wonderful colours fading together, dusted with fluffy white clouds. She closed the gap between herself and her friend, taking a seat as directed at the wolfs side. The dingo took a deep breath, exhaling a little loudly. Calm down you idiot, it's just Fel. That wasn't right, though. It wasn't just Fel. It was Fel. The wolf who accepted her, trained her and believed in her. Fel meant so much to her she couldn't express.

Fel closed her eyes as the other rambled, taking a deep breath and feeling her lungs expand to their capacity, holding it in for a moment. And then, the release. The feeling that made her nervous left through her slacking jaw and moved away, leaving only a pleasant-feeling confidence - much like the kind she always carried, but nicer. It was not a haughty confidence, but simply a feeling of knowing what she was doing and what she could do. The brutish wolf waited for her companion - her creature - to sit beside her. The latter seemed to be nervous, but for once, Fel did not know why. She had no reason to be, and besides, nervousness was not in the nature of the dingo. If anything, Fel would expect for her gregarious side to show through now, as she was in no immediate debt to Fel and was not in training.

The bouquet remained untouched. It lay there with a pleading tremor every time the wind passed along their hill. But once the dingo had settled down, Fel’s large maw drooped to look at them. ”I believe…”She paused pensively, reaching with her massive paw and separating one violet stem from the rest with her claws, ”that I shall place one onto one of the kindest,” she trimmed the stem with her claw, ”most valuable, and most important creatures I have ever met.” For a moment, she had picked up the flower between her toes and made it look like she would place the decoration upon herself. She smirked, pleased with her own joke, and instead transferred it to her maw where she could delicately place the flower behind Narla’s ear. Fel huffed softly, looking the other fae over through her unchanging, icy orbs. The little thing was shaking, and so she removed her gaze from the tawny body and let it rest upon the horizon. ”I shall plant the rest,” she added with a brisk, practical tone. Fel would not verbally address the other’s… fear, was it? But she did gently press her body against the other, breathing deeply to guide her into a calmer rhythm. Once they were both breathing at the same tempo, Fel dropped her body gently onto the ground, letting her hips roll onto the side and her legs to spread behind her companion.

The wolf regarded the gift carefully. Narla was hopeful that Fel would at least appreciate the gesture, if not particularly like the gift itself. Fel lowered her head to inspect the bouquet. Would she bestow the little flower upon herself? It would be in tune with the faes confident personality to do such a thing. The thought of Fel absurdly presenting herself with a flower and accepting brought the corners of her lips into a small, amused smile. Instead something incredible happened; Fel offered the little violet to the dingo, placing it delicately behind her ear. At the faes touch she stiffened momentarily, any sort of contact with the wolf typically resulting in injury as they sparred. Though perhaps not so much as of late. The Beta had become more compassionate towards he little creature, even letting her sleep in her grandly decorated den after the dingos had collapsed in the middle of winter. Fel had kept her warm and safe, she had not wanted her little creature to die in the cold.

But as the brilliantly coloured flower was tucked neatly behind her ear the dingo relaxed, her vibrating ceasing as she knew she'd done something right. A breath she had not realised she was holding had been released. Such sweet relief, but also an extremely odd feeling was spreading through her; one she was not familiar with. It was not pride, though in some ways it was similar. It was not quite joy, although that was present too. Surprise, perhaps a little. It was definitely linked with Fel, she knew as much. For the dark, brutish wolf had claimed the dingo as being "one of the kindest, most valuable and most important creatures" she had met. It was an extremely big compliment. The dingo felt so at ease now, her efforts validated.

She nodded approving of her companions plan to plant the remaining flowers. She knew Fel was tormented by a past of death and torture, to see her create life was heartwarming. The larger beast lay casually atop the cliff and the dusty creature could hardly fight the urge to join her. Narla lowered herself at the wolf's side, laying with her head in her paws as the final rays of sun lit the sky. In this position it was very clear just how much smaller the dingo was. Not that it mattered, they still seemed to fit together perfectly. Narla smiled.
